Sharjah Airport is the third biggest Middle East airfreight center point in load tonnage, as indicated by official 2015 insights from Airports Council International. The current Sharjah Airport was worked in the 1970s and was opened on 1 January 1977. It supplanted RAF Sharjah which was nearer to the city and was opened in 1932. It was the primary airplane terminal in UAE and the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, for use by Imperial Airways, and was in this manner utilized by the RAF until 14 December 1971. The purpose behind the move was advancement weight from the city of Sharjah. The old airplane terminal’s runway is currently part of King Abdul Aziz Street in the downtown area.
The air terminal was utilized by the United States Air Force 926th Tactical Fighter Group amid Operation Desert Shield/Storm. Approximately 450 individuals from the unit were positioned at the airplane terminal, which flew A-10 Thunderbolt II ground assault air ship amid the contention in late 1990 and mid 1991
